Emigration reached its peak in this century in 2013, with around 120 thousand exits, having since started a downward trajectory in line with the economic recovery in the country, albeit at a slower pace. In 2016, this downward trajectory had an acceleration, being the number of exits by a value of the order of the 100 thousand individuals. +

According to the latest estimates of the United Nations, there would be, in 2017, more than 2.2 million Portuguese emigrants residing abroad. More precisely, 2,266,735. Of these, 66% would live in Europe and 26% in the American continent. +

According to the Bank of Portugal, in 2016, 3,343.2 million euros came into the country in remittances, a value slightly higher than the one observed for 2015 (+ 0.8%). The overall trend of growth over the past seven years has therefore been maintained. +

Contrary to expectations, Portuguese emigration to Angola increased significantly (+ 32%) in 2015. With the available data, the recessive effects of the oil price crisis have not yet been felt in that year. On the contrary, in 2015, growth has not only been maintained but has accelerated since 2013.+
