Growth of the number of Portuguese inflow into Canada decelerated in 2016
Inês Vidigal
There were 845 Portuguese who entered Canada in 2016, according to data from Citizenship and Immigration Canada. This represents a slight increase of 3% when compared to the previous year. +

Despite the fluctuations, the number of Portuguese entries into Canada since 2000 has tended to increase. During the period under review, the lowest value of entries was recorded in 2003, when only 329 Portuguese emigrated to Canada. The highest was in 2016, with 845 entries in Canadian territory. The two years of greatest growth of Portuguese emigration to Canada were 2008 (+ 65%) and 2015 (+ 29%). Despite the trend towards growth, the number of Portuguese entrants in Canada remains much lower than that of the 1960s and 1970s, when it reached 5,000 per year.
