Portuguese emigration to Spain decreases 36% in 2020
Inês Vidigal
There were 6,471 Portuguese who entered Spain in 2020, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics. This Spanish agency accounted for a total of 523,618 foreigners entering Spain, with the Portuguese accounting for 1.2% of this total. +

The downward trend that began in 2019, became more pronounced in 2020 as the total number of foreigners and the total number of Portuguese who entered Spanish territory decreased significantly (-40.1% and -36.3%, respectively). The accentuation of this decrease should be explained, in large part, due to the effects of the pandemic on the restriction of mobility that occurred during 2020. Over the time series under analysis, Portuguese emigration to Spain had a minimum value in 2000 (2,955 entries) and a maximum value in 2007 (27,178 entries). Spain was one of the few important destinations where Portuguese entry had been increasing steadily since 2013, in contrast with the general downward trend of Portuguese emigration from that same year onwards.
