Portuguese inflow into the UK is the lowest since 2001
Inês Vidigal
There were 4,414 Portuguese who entered the United Kingdom in 2023, according to data from the Department for Work and Pensions. That British agency accounted for a total of 1,110,596 foreigners in the United Kingdom, with the Portuguese representing 0.4% of that total. +

Compared to the same period in 2022, the number of Portuguese who entered the UK decreased by 44%, from de 7,941 in 2022, to 4,414, in 2023. The total number of migrant entries into the UK reached a record high for the period under analysis (1,110,596 entries in 2023). This increase in the total number of entries and the decrease in Portuguese entries, meant a decrease in the representation of Portuguese nationals on British territory, only in 2001 was there a lower figure. This fall is likely to be associated with the new immigration rules for the United Kingdom post-Brexit.
