Two million Portuguese emigrants in the world
Inês Vidigal
According to the latest United Nations estimates, in 2020 there were about two million Portuguese emigrants living abroad. More precisely, 2,081,419. This international organisation counted a total of 28,0598,105 emigrants in the world, with the Portuguese representing 0.7% of that total. +

In this latest revision of the estimates on international migration, not only were new figures for 2020 calculated but also the figures of the entire series released between 1990 and 2015 were significantly altered and the 2019 figures eliminated. This rectification reduces the number of Portuguese emigrants in the world: in the 2019 estimates, the United Nations calculated that there were about 2.6 million, which in 2020 decreased to about 2 million. According to this revision, in 2020 the highest ever number of Portuguese emigrants in the world has been reached. However, it must be taken into account that these variations are not always due to changes in population movements, but rather in the recording and estimation of these movements.
