Portuguese arrivals in Switzerland interrupt fall and stabilize in 2021
Inês Vidigal
According to data from the Office Fédéral de la Statistique, 7,675 Portuguese entered Switzerland in 2020. The official statistics department counted a total of 143,506 foreigners entering Swiss territory in that year, with the Portuguese accounting for 5.3% of that total. +

The downward trend that had been observed since 2014 was interrupted in 2021, with the number of Portuguese arrivals in Switzerland growing slightly (+1.8%), indicating a stabilizing trend in the number of Portuguese arrivals in Switzerland. Since 2001, the number of Portuguese entering Switzerland has not been so low. The recessive trend of the last years has translated into a relative loss of importance of Portuguese immigration: while in 2013 the Portuguese accounted for 12% of migrant arrivals in Switzerland, in 2021 they represented only 5.3%.
