Portuguese arrivals in Switzerland decrease for the seventh year in a row

According to data from the Office Fédéral de la Statistique, 7,542 Portuguese entered Switzerland in 2020. The official statistics department counted a total of 137,685 foreigners entering Swiss territory in that year, with the Portuguese accounting for 5.5% of that total. +

This was the seventh consecutive year in which emigration to Switzerland declined significantly, after reaching its peak in 2013. Since 2001, the number of Portuguese entering Switzerland has not been so low. The recessive trend translated into a relative loss of importance of Portuguese immigration: while in 2013 the Portuguese accounted for 12% of migrant arrivals in Switzerland, in 2020 they represented only 5.5%. The decrease in Portuguese emigration to Switzerland is accelerating again: from -3.3% in 2019 to -10.7% in 2020.
