Emigration to the Netherlands interrupts growth and decreases in 2020
Inês Vidigal
According to data from the Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek, 1,933 Portuguese entered the Netherlands in 2020. This Dutch agency accounted for a total of 189,007 foreigners entering the country, with the Portuguese accounting for 1% of this total. +

The growth trend that had been seen since 2016 was interrupted in 2020, with the number of Portuguese arrivals in the Netherlands decreasing again (-32%), in a year in which the number of total arrivals of foreigners also decreased (-19.9%). Throughout the time series under analysis (2000-2020), Portuguese emigration to the Netherlands had a minimum value in 2005, with 830 entries, and a very strong growth between that year and 2008. A slight decrease between 2013 and 2015 was replaced by continuous growth in the following years, with the maximum value of the series to be recorded in 2019, with 2,841 entries. The Netherlands was one of the few important destinations where Portuguese arrivals had been steadily increasing in recent years.
