Significant decrease in the number of Portuguese entries in Canada in 2020
Inês Vidigal
There were 550 Portuguese who entered Canada in 2020, according to data from Citizenship and Immigration Canada. The official statistics department accounted for a total of 184,590 entries of foreigners in Canadian territory in that year, with the Portuguese accounting for 0.3% of this total. +

The slight decrease recorded in 2019 was accentuated in 2020, with both the total number of foreigners and the total number of Portuguese entering Canada decreasing significantly (-45.9% and -35.7%, respectively). The sharpening of this decrease is largely explained by the effects of the pandemic on the restriction of mobility that occurred during the year 2020. During the period under review, the lowest value was recorded in 2003 (329 entries), while the highest was in 2018 (865 entries). Portuguese emigration to Canada continues to represent a very small fraction of both immigration in this country (0.3%) and total Portuguese emigration (less than 1%).
