The increase of Portuguese emigration to the United Kingdom in 2019 is confirmed
Inês Vidigal
There were 24,593 Portuguese who entered the United Kingdom in 2019, according to data from the Department for Work and Pensions. That British agency accounted for a total of 766,134 foreigners in the United Kingdom, with the Portuguese representing 3.2% of that total. +

Compared to the same period in 2018, the number of Portuguese entering the United Kingdom increased by around 30% from 18,871 in 2018 to 24,593 in 2019. This growth was more marked than in the number of migrants entering the United Kingdom as a whole (+21%), but the evolution of Portuguese emigration followed the general trend of reversing the decrease in entries into the United Kingdom on the eve of Brexit. As mentioned before, this growth, in addition to being able to include some cases of regularisation of the previous emigration, is probably due to the perception that after Brexit it may be more difficult to emigrate to the United Kingdom.
