Remittance value continued to grow in 2019
Inês Vidigal
According to data from Banco de Portugal, in 2019 3,604.01 million euros in remittances from emigrants entered the country, a figure higher than that observed in 2018 (1.1% more). This confirms the more general growth trend registered since 2010. +

The value of remittances reached in 2019 is, in nominal terms, the highest in the euro era. In the series under analysis, it was only in 2001, before the introduction of the euro, that it was registered the highest value (3,736.82 million euros). Throughout the century, from 2001 to 2019, the variation in the value of emigrants' remittances received in Portugal describes a U-shaped curve, falling until 2009, more pronounced in 2002 and 2003, and predominating, since 2010, an upward trend, more marked in 2012 and 2013. All these changes should be analysed with caution as they are measured in nominal values and may in some cases be explained more by exchange rate variations than by shifts in emigration.
