Fewer Portuguese entering Switzerland for the fifth consecutive year
Inês Vidigal
According to data from the Office Fédéral de la Statistique, 8,733 Portuguese entered Switzerland in 2018. The official statistics department counted a total of 146,183 foreigners entering Swiss territory in that year, with the Portuguese accounting for 6% of that total.

This was the fifth consecutive year in which emigration to Switzerland declined significantly, after reaching its peak in 2013. Since 2001, the number of Portuguese entering Switzerland has not been so low. The recessive trend translated into a relative loss of importance of Portuguese immigration: while in 2013 the Portuguese accounted for 12% of migrant arrivals in Switzerland, in 2018 they represented only 6%. The decrease in Portuguese emigration to Switzerland, however, shows a tendency towards deceleration: from -24% in 2014 to -5.7% in 2018.
