Emigration to Spain exceeds ten thousand entries
Inês Vidigal
There were 10,636 Portuguese who entered Spain in 2018, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics. This Spanish agency accounted for a total of 760,804 foreigners entering Spain, with the Portuguese accounting for 1.4% of this total.

For the fifth consecutive year, the number of Portuguese arrivals in Spain increased, the first time since 2008 that these arrivals have exceeded ten thousand. Over the time series under analysis (2000-2018), Portuguese emigration to Spain had a minimum value in 2000 (2,968 entries) and a maximum value in 2007 (27,178 entries). Spain is one of the few important destinations where Portuguese entry has increased continuously since 2013, in contrast to the general downward trend of Portuguese emigration since that same year. With the value registered in 2018, Spain already surpasses Germany as a destination for Portuguese emigration.
