Remittance value increased in 2017
Inês Vidigal
According to the data from Banco de Portugal, in 2016, 3,343.2 million euros came in the country in remittances, a slightly higher value than the one observed for 2015 (plus 0.8%). The overall trend of growth over the past seven years has therefore been maintained. +

The value of remittances reached in 2017 is, in nominal terms, the highest in the euro era. In the series under analysis, it was only in 2001, before the introduction of the euro, that it was registered the highest value (3,736.82 million euros). From 2002, it is possible to distinguish three phases. The value of remittances decreased between 2002 and 2004, which could be due to the change in the registration criteria resulting from the creation of the euro area rather than to actual changes in the value of the transfers effected. Between 2004 and 2011, the value of shipments remained stable, at a slightly undulating level. In the period 2012-2016, it rose significantly, having reached, in 2016, the highest value of the euro era. In 2015 there was an acceleration of that increase, compared to the deceleration observed in 2014.
