70,000 Portuguese emigrated in 2022
Inês Vidigal
The Emigration Observatory estimates that 70,000 Portuguese left the country in 2022, 5,000 more than in 2021, thus continuing the recovery of national emigration to values close to those of the years before the covid-19 pandemic. These are the figures published in the book "Portuguese Emigration 2023. Statistical Report", released on Friday 12 July. +

The Emigration Observatory also revised the figures for 2021, updating the estimate for that year from 60,000 to 65,000. The only reason the recovery in 2022 wasn't complete was because emigration to the United Kingdom fell by more than 40 per cent, following the recessionary trend that began with the Brexit process. Strictly speaking, Portuguese emigration is now higher than pre-Covid levels in most of its main destinations. In 2022, the United Kingdom was no longer the main destination for Portuguese emigration, having been surpassed by Spain, France and Switzerland.
