United Nations estimates on Portuguese emigration
[OEm] In the section entitled "Destination countries", the Observatory has included United Nations estimates of the stock of the Portuguese population emigrated. The information available concerns the years of 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015 and 2017. +

These estimates, identified in the tables with the symbol e, are used when there is no data available from national statistical sources of destination countries.

As a rule, United Nations estimates define emigrants as those who live in a country other than the one in which they were born. When this indicator can not be estimated, the United Nations uses information about foreigners residing in the countries of destination. For this reason, the estimates now disclosed in the "Destination countries" section are available either in Tables A.1 ("Foreign-born population") or in Tables A.2 ("Resident population by nationality").
