Portuguese migration to South America and citizenship

About the speakers

Beatriz Padilla holds a PhD and MA in sociology from the University of Illinois, an MA in public affairs from the University of Texas, and a BA in political science and public administration from the National University of Cuyo, Argentina. She is currently the director of the Institute for the Study of Latin America, the Caribbean, and Latinos in the US (ISLAC), at the University of South Florida, where she teaches, and a researcher at the Center for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES-Iscte), at Iscte, University Institute of Lisbon. Her research interests include migration, diversity, gender, health, inequality, and public policy. Recently, she co-edited the book International Migrations and Public Policies in Portugal (Mundo Social, 2018), and Gender and Mobilities in the Present Time (Todapalavra, 2021).

Thais França holds a PhD in sociology from the University of Coimbra, a master's degree in work, organizational and personal psychology (WOP-P) from the University of Bologna, and a degree in psychology from the Federal University of Ceará. She is currently a researcher at the Center for Research and Studies in Sociology of the Iscte, University Institute of Lisbon (CIES-Iscte), visiting researcher at the Gino Germani Institute, University of Buenos Aires and at the Instituto de Altos Estudios Sociales, University of San Martin in Argentina, and member of the European Commission expert group on the impact of the covid-19 pandemic on gender equality in the European Union. Her research interests are linked to feminist and gender studies, migration studies, postcolonial studies, labor market, globalization, internationalization of higher education, and international academic and student mobility.

 

About the moderator

Rui Pena Pires is a professor at Iscte, where he completed his undergraduate, master's and doctoral degrees in sociology and where he is a researcher at the Center for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES-Iscte), of Iscte, University Institute of Lisbon. He has been scientific coordinator of the Emigration Observatory since 2009. Previously, he was director of the sociology department and pro-rector of Iscte, Instituto Universitário de Lisboa. From 2007 to 2010 he was a member of the Management Board of the Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) of the European Union (EU). His research interests include sociological theories, international migration and development sociology. He is the author of several publications, including the book Migrations and Integration: Theory and Applications to Portuguese Society (Celta 2003).
