Abstract
Portugal is today a country marked by emigration, where individuals leave in search of better conditions and a higher quality of life. Analyzing only qualified emigration, the nurses correspond to one of the professional groups that stands out, moving mostly to European countries, preferably to the United Kingdom. A more recent problem and due to its complexity still little analyzed, are the returns to Portugal by these professionals, which by emigrating significantly make us predict that at least part of them may can return later. Thus, and since Portugal loses, in several ways, whenever nurses move abroad, it becomes more than pertinent to raise questions regarding their return: Why do nurses decide to return? Do they continue to practice nursing even with inferior conditions? Do they give up their profession to live in their country of origin? Is their return promoted and facilitated? This is, without a doubt, a professional sector marked by emigration and the precariousness of their profession, in which their return and (re)insertion in the labor market differs with specific characteristics. In order to analyze the problem, 10 semi-structured interviews were conducted with portuguese nurses who, after their migration experience in the United Kingdom, returned to Portugal. The objective is to understand the reasons that determine their return, the main difficulties felt during the process, the ways in which the (re)insertion in hospitals and clinics happens, as well as the future prospects of these professionals. Will the return of nurses to the portuguese labor market be definitive, or will its reemigration be enhanced?
