Abstract
Job satisfaction represents not only a central role in the nurses’ life but presents a symbiotic relationship with the quality of the nursing care provided. When not achieved, for some, emigration tends to be seen as a solution. 2019 saw a record (4506) of nurses that left Portugal to work abroad (60% higher than in 2018). Despite the invisible barriers imposed by the global pandemic, 2020 saw another 1230 cases. Thus, this study intends to oppose these two realities, comparing nurses’ job satisfaction who are working in Portugal with those who are working in other countries. In addition, aspires to analyze the correlation of the dependent variable with the sociodemographic and professional independent variables. With this assumption, the research aims to create new knowledge by exploring what is considered a failure in the literature which, with the increase in the number of emigrations in the nursing community, is becoming increasingly more pertinent. The defined objective is translated into a cross-sectional, descriptive-correlational, and non-experimental study using primary data collected via a self-administered online form consisting of a sociodemographic and professional questionnaire and the EAST-Enf scale,
available between June 2021 and September 2021. The non-probabilistic sample, obtained by convenience, consists of 224 nurses, actively working in Portugal (n=154) and abroad (n=70). Statistical analysis was performed using IBM® SPSS® (using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis tests, and Spearman’s correlation). The results of the empirical evidence support the postulate by the hypotheses, verifying that Portuguese nurses working abroad have a higher overall job satisfaction score compared with those working in Portugal, which was consistent across all dimensions measured by the adopted scale. However, no statistically significant correlation was found between the variables. From the results, it is concluded that nurses working abroad are more satisfied than those working in Portugal. Was in the “benefits and rewards” and “promotion” dimensions where the difference was most significant.
