In this lecture given by Asaf Augusto, the migratory movement from Portugal to Angola and from Angola to Portugal is analyzed from a South-North migration perspective. Concepts such as Luso-tropicalism and coloniality are also addressed.
About the speaker
Asaf Augusto holds an MA in systematic and historical theology from North West University-Potchefstroom, South Africa, and a PhD in human geography, specializing in immigration studies, from Bayreuth University. He is currently doing post-doctoral work comparing Portuguese emigration to Angola since the 2008 economic crisis with Angolan immigration to Portugal since the 2014-2015 oil crisis. Her work has focused primarily on the dynamics of migration from North to South and the intersection of past and present.
About the moderator
Sofia Gaspar is a professor at Iscte and a researcher at the Center for Research and Studies in Sociology. She has a PhD in Sociology from the Complutense University of Madrid and, in recent years, has coordinated several projects on binational couples, transnational families and Chinese immigrants in Portugal. She is a member of the Coordinating Team of the Thematic Section Migrations, Ethnicity and Racism of the Portuguese Sociological Association (APS), and co-organizer of the bimonthly events Encontros de Estudos sobre China and Seminar Diversidade Cultural em Famílias Contemporâneas, both held at Cies-Iscte. Her current research interests focus, among others, on privileged migrations, investment mobility, social integration of the descendents of immigrants, especially the Chinese community in Portugal and Europe.
