Abstract
Migration is a marking and recursive phenomenon in the Portuguese society that has
come since the 60’s narrowing its flow but widening in migrants typologies. In order to
explore the current migratory willingness and how do it comes up in a poorly-studied
population, so as to inquire if there is an healthy migratory project to the country, a
comparative study between college attending youth from 3 different faculties has been lined-
up. The study aims to uncover if there is willingness to migrate, which attitudes encourage or
contain it, and what is the influence some factors such as college subject, gender,
satisfaction with life or self-esteem have in it.
Therefore, an inquiry based on the Push, Pull, Anti-Push and Anti-Pull perspective, to
which the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS), Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) and
other questions were added, has been applied to a convenience collected sample composed
of 300 college attending students, divided equally by faculties and gender. On the data
acquired, a series of statistical analysis were conducted, mostly simple variance and
correlation ones. Content analysis was applied as well.
Generally, it has been found that a series of countries cumulate most of the sample’s
preferences, with England leading the list. The Push attitude appeared to be the starker,
mostly among the results shown by the feminine gender. In general, the willingness to
migrate isn’t high, and the satisfaction with life or self-esteem didn’t reveal differences in that
motivation. When it comes to faculties’ perspectives, it has been found that the Feup and
Fpceup students display an higher intention to migrate due to work motives, while the Icbas
ones privilege studying motives
