Abstract
Portuguese emigration recurred in mass in the recent years, mainly since 2008, due the rising unemployment, caused by the economic crisis. This immigration has been studied, especially on the cultural aspects, acculturation and social networks of migrants. However, the immigrant entrepreneurship specifically the one related with the concept of 'Mercado da Saudade' has not been adequately explored.
This dissertation aims to analyse the process of business creation by Portuguese immigrant entrepreneurs, whose scope of activity is associated with the 'Mercado da Saudade'. From the methodological point of view, and as a result of the research question, we selected a qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews to 4 Portuguese immigrant entrepreneurs, who created companies related to 'Mercado da Saudade', located in Berlin, London, Macao and Madrid. From analysis of the gathered information emerged 3 principal results/findings: 1) there may be an opportunity in the implementation of businesses related to the Portuguese 'Mercado da Saudade' outside the countries of the Portuguese diaspora, since the target audience considered in the case studies was not Portuguese, contrasting the traditional
definition of 'Mercado da Saudade'; 2) The bureaucratic complexity allied to the business process creation in the host countries was the greater difficulty experienced by these entrepreneurs. Added to this difficulty is the fact that no official support exists in this area, which led to the emergence of what might be designated as 'institutional entrepreneurship': the creation of an association to support Portuguese immigrant entrepreneurs; 3) The individual characteristics of the immigrant entrepreneurs are key factors in immigrant entrepreneurship related to ‘Mercado da Saudade’, namely: large capacity for achievement, commitment, resilience, motivation and enthusiasm for risk, mainly because they combine professional activity on behalf of third parties with the process of business creation.
