Abstract

The objective of our study is to analyze, in the context of the phenomen of the repatriation, the case of azorean repatriates in the Azores Islands. This problem assumes a big relevance in result of the progressive stream of deported, coming mainly from the U.S.A. and Canada. Of the general theoretical framework in the field of Social Sciences, we selected problematics/questions/axes of analysis (poverty, violence, deviation, delinquency, exclusion) that look fundamental for the comprehension of the journey of the azorean repatriates, since the moment they emigrated to their deportation. The methodological approach followed the kind of qualitative, exploratory case study, finding perform a diagnosis of the situation of the repatriated population in Azores, in the context of the exclusion/insertion. We applied an interview of character semi-directive and directive to ninety two repatriated and a questionnaire to a hundred persons, all them residents in S. Miguel island. The results were summarized in big thematic areas: the analysis of the path(s) of azorean repatriates, as well the effort that the Government and the regional institutions have expended in the reduction of this phenomen, led us to reflect about the strategies of facilitation of the social insertion of the azorean repatriates.
