Abstract

Emigration to Brazil was a continuous, centuries-old phenomenon of enormous importance, not only because of the large numbers it involved, but also because of the demographic, economic, social, and cultural repercussions it had in Portugal and Brazil. Although notable historiographical progress has been made in this field in recent times, through nearly parallel research on both sides of the Atlantic, the studies produced to date on legal emigration to Brazil and its return, while numerous and comprehensive, have only briefly touched on this structural constant of Portuguese history with regard to the municipality of Vila do Conde. This study, "The Municipality of Vila do Conde and Brazilian Emigration and Return (1865-1913), sought to analyze quantitatively and qualitatively the legal emigration contingent that flowed from the municipality of Vila do Conde to Brazil between 1865 and 1913, based on the records of the Terms of Responsibility and Guarantee, and to define as accurately as possible the profile of the Vila do Conde emigrant. Alongside the study of the emigration process, this work also considers the phenomenon of return, which gives greater analytical breadth to the subject in question. From a micro-analytic perspective, using variables provided by Residence Permits and Declarations of Nationality, the first phase involved statistical reconstruction and characterization of the profile of the protagonists of the reflux. Subsequently, the impact of Brazilians on the municipality was analyzed, and finally, some biographical sketches were drawn. As complementary themes to emigration and return, we analyzed the historical context and legislative evolution; the spatial, socioeconomic and cultural characterization of the municipality, as well as the clarification of the relationship between military recruitment and emigration.
