Abstract
Many 19th-century writers worked toward a literary project that affirmed Brazil's image, inspired by observed reality and the works of foreign writers who arrived in the country late in life and from whom they received aesthetic and literary influences. Aluísio Azevedo's work has a documentary vocation, utilizing the almost massive presence of Portuguese emigrants in Brazilian urban life, especially in Rio de Janeiro and São Luís do Maranhão, which the novelist seeks to recreate literarily. This dissertation aims to examine the defining traits of the Portuguese emigrant, drawing on Aluísio Azevedo's works *O Mulato*, *Casa de Pensão*, and *O Cortiço*, not only because they depict a diverse range of characters but, above all, because of the degree of verisimilitude the author seeks in his narratives. The work is structured based on a comparison between the characters of the different works, in an attempt to find hypotheses and links between the stereotypes around which the figure of the Portuguese was constructed, mainly during the period of mass emigration to Brazil (1851-1930).
