Abstract

The emigration’s theme is recurrent in the history of Portugal. Since ever Portuguese left the country searching adventure, a better life and work. It’s thus a subject that has required several studies and there are a lot of works written about the Portuguese emigration. Being a subject much analysed, the study made tried to develop a less known aspect, such as the emigration of women in micro-history, specifically in Figueira da Foz’s municipality, between 1960 and 1975. The characteristic of women’s emigration is its plannification and organization and it’s inserted into a second phase of emigration: The family reunion. It was mainly a legal emigration in opposition of men’s. Those, the main aim of this study is to analyse the female emigration process, since its beginning in Portugal, until their settlement in France. As a basis for this study we used among other sources the Emigration Bulletins, key elements for emigration process as they provide essential elements about emigrant woman. We also interviewed former emigrants in order to obtain information about private and hidden aspects of the emigration process, conditions of travelling and its costs and difficulties of everyday life in France, specially as accommodation is concerned.
