Abstract

Migrations are one of the fundamental subjects in international relations, being of importance in the case of Portugal, Brazil, country which has been founded as a reference in Portuguese emigration, in the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, whereas its repercussions are still left on modern Portuguese society. We choose, thus, as subject of our work the analysis and characterization of emigration from the North of Portugal to Brazil in the years of 1876 to 1879, through the survey, treatment and analysis of elements gathered at the passport record-books from Porto’s Civil Government, which are part of the documental collection of the Porto District Archive. Through the use of statistical methods of data interpretation we analyze the passports records issued by Porto’s Civil Government, we delineate a profile of the emigrant from the north of Portugal who crossed the Atlantic Ocean to reach Brazil, highlighting the total number of departing individuals gathered at the passport records from Porto’s Civil Government in said period, and its relative relevance in the national context of emigration. We still proceed to their distribution by gender, marital status, age groups, birthplace, social and professional classification, familiar or professional groupings, and destination. Therefore, this study tries to clarify the conditioning factors, endogenous and exogenous, of the Portuguese emigration in this period, as well as building a generic profile of the northern Portuguese emigrant, and their motivations, in the period in analysis.
