Abstract
International migration flows have always been a reality in Portugal. Since the beginning of the millennium, Portugal has received several immigrants of different nationalities, but has also been dealing with the departure of thousands of portuguese every year, searching for better living conditions or new opportunities abroad. From the literature review carried out until then, we have verified that there are several
studies on the economic and commercial effects of immigration in Portugal, but there is a lack of studies about the effects of emigration. In order to contribute to the reduction of this deficit, we intend, with this work, to find a connection between the portuguese emigration and the potential that it can bring to the country's economy, both in terms of trade relations and institutional relations. Initially, we will address different theories on migration and their relation with the development of trade relations between countries of origin and host countries. Then, a statistical analysis will be carried out to compare emigration data with the volume of exports of goods between Portugal and 7 other countries, namely Germany, Angola, Canada, Spain, the United States of America, France and the United Kingdom. Finally, we will analyze the results and
verify if, in fact, we can affirm that the portuguese diaspora can influence the economic and institutional development of Portugal.
