In this webminar is presented the most recent article prepared by the Observatory of Emigration which explores the evolution of Portuguese emigration in the XXI century, identifying the episodes and mechanisms that explain it, the level in which Portugal is in migratory terms, and the methodological issues that arise when studying it. This is followed by a debate with Professor Rui Pena Pires, from the Emigration Observatory, Professor José Carlos Marques, from the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, Professor Jorge Malheiros, from the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning, and Professor Lígia Ferro, from the Faculty of Arts, University of Porto.
About the speakers:
Lígia Ferro is an assistant professor at the Department of Sociology of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto, and a researcher at the Institute of Sociology of the University of Porto. She graduated in sociology at the University of Porto, and obtained a European PhD from Iscte. She is currently a member of the Coordinating Commission and the Scientific Council of the Emigration Observatory as a representative of the Institute of Sociology (IS-UP) of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Porto (FL-UP). She is the author and editor of several publications, including the books Moving Cities: Contested Views on Urban Life, Da Rua para o Mundo. Etnografia Urbana Comparada do Graffiti e do Parkour and O Trabalho da Arte e a Arte do Trabalho: Circuitos Criativos de Artistas Imigrantes em Portugal. Her research interests include various themes and objects of sociology through an ethnographic approach.
Jorge Malheiros is a geographer and researcher at the Centre for Geographical Studies of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning of the University of Lisbon, where he is also an associate professor in the fields of Theory of Geography, Methodologies, Social Geography, Migrations and Geopolitics. He conducts research in the areas of urban social studies and international migration, with emphasis on the integration of immigrants, demographic dynamics, gender relations, housing and segregation problems, and border and transnational relations. He is currently a member of the Coordinating Commission and the Scientific Council of the Emigration Observatory as a representative of the Centre for Geographical Studies (CEG) of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning of the University of Lisbon (IGOT-UL). He has published several works in Portugal and abroad and has participated and coordinated projects in the field of migration, integration, social exclusion and housing. He is a member of the editorial board of IMISCOE-Amsterdam University Press/Springer (Migration) and Portuguese correspondent of SOPEMI-OCDE.
José Carlos Marques is a principal coordinating professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria and researcher at the Centre for Social Studies, Coimbra, where he is part of the Migration Studies Centre. He is currently a member of the Scientific Council of the Emigration Observatory. His research interests have focused on international migration, migration policies, Portuguese migration flows, integration of immigrants, transnational practices of migrants, highly skilled migration, and the insertion of immigrants into Portuguese society. His most recent projects have studied current Portuguese emigration flows, discrimination practices in the labor market, and emigrants' attachment practices and policies.
Rui Pena Pires is a professor at Iscte, where he completed his bachelor, master and doctoral studies in sociology and where he is a researcher at Cies_iscte. He has been scientific coordinator of the Emigration Observatory since 2009. Previously, he was director of the Sociology Department and Dean of Iscte. From 2007 to 2010 he was a member of the Management Board of the Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) of the European Union (EU). His research interests include sociological theories, international migration and sociology of development. He is the author of several publications, including the book Migrations and Integration: Theory and Applications to Portuguese Society (Celta 2003).
About the moderator:
Joana Azevedo is an assistant professor at the School of Sociology and Public Policy at the University Institute of Lisbon, Iscte, and an integrated researcher at the Center for Research and Studies in Sociology, Cies_iul. She is currently executive coordinator at the Emigration Observatory, and was co-founder of the network of migration researchers, Rede Migra. She has a PhD in Theory and Social Research from Universita degli Studi di Roma "La Sapienza" and a degree in Sociology from Iscte. Research interests: sociology of migration, Portuguese immigration and emigration, skilled migration, political participation and migration policies.
