Abstract
In the revolutionary European context of the early of 19th century, after Don Miguel return to Portugal from his exile in Viena and take the Portuguese throne for himself, in 1828, thousands of liberals, escaping from absolutist persecution, abandoned their country and started the largest Portuguese exile of the19th century. In spite being a phenomenon totally political, the Portuguese liberal exile of 1828-1832, was an experience more ample, including a diversity of dimensions. Never losing its political component, strongly present, it was also a phenomenon of high social, cultural and intellectual importance, with visible repercussions after liberal victory in Portuguese civil war of 1832-1834. This thesis analyses each one of these dimensions and shows that the exile, in spite of all the difficulties, contributed to the cultural and intellectual development of Portugal.
