Abstract

Among the main questions to be clarified is the path that Portugal will follow after the crossroads of the 2008 global crisis and the financial rescue of 2011. Are the new emigration movements strongly dependent on the conjuncture, coming to decelerate after an eventual economic recovery of the country? Are they a distinct type of movement, which creates new forms of transnationalism, from which the existence of dual residences and dual activities does not call into question the economic connections and interests in the country? Or are they an indicator of the loss of thickness of Portuguese society, which may thus find itself without many of its elites and workforce, accentuating its peripheral status in Europe?
