Portuguese emigration to Australia reverses growth trend in 2025
Inês Vidigal
According to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 410 Portuguese nationals entered the country in 2025. This statistical agency recorded a total of 529,340 entries of foreign nationals into Australian territory, with Portuguese individuals representing 0.1% of this total. +

Since 2022, Portuguese immigration to Australia had followed an upward trajectory, which was interrupted in 2025, when the flow declined by 18%. This trend broadly mirrored the decrease in the total number of foreign arrivals in Australia, although the latter was slightly less pronounced (-15.3%). The number of Portuguese arrivals is now approaching the levels recorded before the 2008 crisis. Between 2000 and 2025, Portuguese arrivals in Australia reached their lowest level in 2021 (120 arrivals) and their highest in 2013 (700 arrivals).
