Published in July 2026 by the Portuguese Emigration Observatory, the new volume is edited by Inês Vidigal, Jorge Malheiros, Daniela Craveiro and Idalina Machado and brings together summaries of findings from five recent doctoral theses completed between 2018 and 2023. The book focuses on two key dimensions of the migration experience – integration in destination countries and return to Portugal – approaching emigration as a dynamic and multifaceted process.

The event will feature Liliana Azevedo, Dora Sampaio, Pedro Candeias, Carolina Pinto and João Baía, authors of the different contributions included in the volume. Following the presentation of the book, a roundtable entitled “The State of Portuguese Emigration” will bring the authors together for a discussion moderated by Bárbara Reis, journalist at Público.

The event will also provide an opportunity for a broader discussion on recent transformations in Portuguese emigration, different processes of integration in destination countries, return trajectories, and the forms of mobility and belonging that increasingly shape contemporary migration experiences.
