After reaching a peak of 6,715 entries into Angola in 2015, the number of Portuguese emigrants declined sharply, hitting a low point in the pandemic year of 2020 (377 entries). Between 2021 and 2023, entries recovered, surpassing 1,000 in 2023. However, in 2024 there was a marked downturn in Portuguese emigration to Angola, with a decrease of 37%. This decline is likely linked to the recessionary effects of the oil price crisis on Angola’s migrant labour market, which became more pronounced from 2016 onwards, within a broader context of economic deterioration characterized by prolonged contraction, reduced investment, and worsening employment conditions. The figures presented in this highlight correspond to the sum of the following types of visas issued by the Angolan consulates in Lisbon and Porto: privileged, work (the most common), protocol-based work, residence permit, and other categories (study and temporary stay).
