Portuguese Emigration to Italy slows in 2024
Inês Vidigal
In 2024, 681 Portuguese nationals entered Italy, according to data from the Istituto Nazionale di Statistica. This national statistical authority recorded a total of 434,579 foreign entries into Italy, with Portuguese nationals accounting for only 0.2% of this total. +

Following two consecutive years of growth in Portuguese emigration to Italy, which had reached historical peaks, a slight decrease (-3%) was recorded in 2024. Despite this decline, the flow observed in 2024 still represents the second-highest level in the period under review. Considering the longer time series (2000–2022), the number of Portuguese entering Italy reached a minimum in 2002 (297 entries) and a maximum in 2023 (702 entries). Nevertheless, Portuguese emigration to Italy continues to represent only a very small share of total immigration to the country (around 0.2%) and less than 1% of overall Portuguese emigration, underscoring its limited significance in the broader context of international migration flows.
