Slight decline in Portuguese emigration to Switzerland in 2024
Inês Vidigal
According to data from the Office Fédéral de la Statistique, 12,388 Portuguese entered Switzerland in 2024. The official statistics department counted a total of 190,043 foreigners entering Swiss territory in that year, with the Portuguese accounting for 6.5% of that total. +

After the significant increase in Portuguese emigration to Switzerland recorded in 2023, a slight decline was observed in 2024 (-2.1%). This decrease, however, contrasts with the much sharper drop in total immigration to Switzerland in the same year (-21.2%). As a result of these combined dynamics, the share of Portuguese immigration in total entries increased, reaching 6.5%. Even with the slight decline in 2024, the number of Portuguese entries remained above 12,000, a level that, after being reached regularly until 2015, was not observed between 2016 and 2022, having only been regained in 2023. Between 2000 and 2024, the minimum number of Portuguese entries into Switzerland was recorded in 2000 (4,311 entries), while the maximum was reached in 2013 (20,039 entries).
