A diploma to leave (Diploma de saída)
A new documentary produced by the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation (FFMS) in collaboration with RTP explores the emigration of young qualified Portuguese and the challenges of retaining talent in the country.

Featuring updated data from the Portuguese Emigration Observatory and expert insights from Professor Rui Pena Pires, the documentary examines the structural factors that continue to drive thousands of young graduates to leave Portugal each year.

Against a backdrop of below-average European salaries, limited prospects for career progression, and a desire for better quality of life, many seek abroad what they feel is lacking at home.

Combining statistical data, interviews with experts, and testimonies from emigrants and returnees, the documentary — narrated by journalist Carlos Daniel — offers a comprehensive look at one of Portugal’s major structural challenges: how can the country compete for talent in a borderless world?
