Abstract

This research is framed within the scope of the internship for obtaining a Master's Degree in Tourism and Innovation from the Polytechnic University of Viana do Castelo (IPVC). In addition to presenting and reflecting on the main tasks performed during the curricular internship at the Embassy of Portugal in Hungary, this report focuses on analysing the contribution of the diaspora to the promotion and recognition of the country of origin as a tourist destination, with the Portuguese diaspora in Hungary as a case study. This research adopted a mixed-methods approach, although predominantly qualitative, favouring direct and interactive contact with the object of study, through (participant) observation and semi-structured interviews. The results show that diaspora members are potentially among the best promoters and influencers of their country and region of origin at the international level and can be powerful allies in the promotion of tourism and sustainable development of their homelands. They also allow to conclude that, in Hungary, both the members of the Portuguese diaspora and the events organised by the Portuguese foreign policy entities present there have a significant contribution to the promotion of Portugal as a tourist destination. Therefore, this study not only contributes to the understanding of this theme but is also of interest to decision-makers in the fields of tourism and migration, as well as to tourism sector organisations and stakeholders, mainly to destination management organisations (DMOs). In addition, it can strengthen the relations between Portugal and Hungary, as well as between the Portuguese government, tourism and diaspora organisations, and Portuguese communities. The main limitations encountered during this research and suggestions for future research are also presented.
