Emigration to Italy registers decade high in 2019
Inês Vidigal
According to Eurostat data, 528 Portuguese entered Italy in 2019. That European agency accounted for a total of 332,778 entries by foreigners into Italy, with the Portuguese accounting for only 0.2% of that total. +

In 2019, Portuguese emigration to Italy recorded the highest value of this decade, having grown by 9.1% compared to the previous year. After a sharp increase in the number of Portuguese inflows into Italian territory in 2016, of +25.1%, in 2017 and 2018 a deceleration can be observed, leaving growth at a lower level. Over the time series under analysis (2000-2018), the number of Portuguese entries in Italy had a minimum value in 2002 (297 entries) and a maximum value in 2007 (594 entries). However, Portuguese emigration to Italy still represents a very small fraction of both immigration in this country (0.2%) and total Portuguese emigration (less than 1%).
